About Doctor Hugo

Hello, my name is Hugo Fernandes, thanks for taking the time to get to know a little about me.  I am a consultant gynaecologist and advanced laparoscopic (key-hole) surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria.  My main rooms are in Richmond at the Epworth but I also consult in Coburg and Warragul.

Whilst I manage all gynaecological problems, I have a special interest in:

  • Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Pelvic Pathology & Pelvic Pain
  • Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
  • Menstrual Disorders & Fibroids
  • Infertility
  • Colposcopy

I grew up in Melbourne and completed my specialist training at Monash Health in 2011. It was there I developed my passion for minimally invasive and advanced surgery with extended rotations in gynaecology, oncology, colorectal and general surgery.

In 2012 I was appointed the advanced laparoscopic surgical fellow at The Royal Women’s Hospital and undertook a further 2 years of speciality training to refine and advance my surgical skills. In 2013 I was awarded the prestigious ‘David Healy Memorial Travelling Fellowship’ and in 2014 I became the first AGES accredited laparoscopic surgeon. This means I am one of only a handful of surgeons trained and accredited by the peak gynaecological society in Australasia. I am currently a consultant gynaecologist at The Royal Women’s Hospital and Monash Health .

As a gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, my focus is always on delivering the best outcome for my patients.  I have completed a Masters in Reproduction and I remain abreast of the latest and most effective treatment options by being actively involved in Australian and international gynaecological societies. I have presented locally and internationally, actively mentor students and junior doctors and have ongoing research in adenomyosis, endometriosis and infertility at Monash IVF .

I am committed to delivering the highest level of professional care with diligence, integrity, respect and compassion. I have chosen to only practice in gynaecology, laparoscopic surgery and infertility so that I can concentrate on the patient I am consulting with, or operating on, without the concern of having obstetric patients in labour.

When you choose to see me, I will provide you with the most up-to-date and relevant information. I approach your health holistically and give you all available options so you can make informed decisions. I do not overstate my abilities nor downplay your concerns and I will always do my best by you.

I live in Melbourne with my partner and our 4 girls (toddler to teens!).  I am a tragic supporter of the Melbourne Football Club and enjoy travelling, good wine, good coffee and all things WWII and aviation related.

Thank-you again for your time.

Hugo Fernandes.
